The announcement was made during a ceremony held at Pura Mangkunegaran in Surakarta and was attended by Gojek and KAI Commuter management, the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises, and local governments from Central Java and Surakarta. The expansion is expected to increase ease of mobility between the two regions, providing the public and tourists with an integrated, convenient and efficient multimodal transport service.

The collaboration between Gojek and KAI Commuter, which was previously implemented in Jabodetabek, now allows users in more than nine cities/regencies1 in Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region to access and purchase public transportation tickets through one single application, creating a seamless and integrated experience.

Commuterline Solo-Jogja and Kereta Prambanan Ekspress (Jogja-Kutoarjo) passengers can now enjoy a variety of benefits by using the GoTransit feature in the Gojek app, including

  1. Cashless purchase of tickets and free deposit balance
  2. Purchase of up to four tickets from one app - perfect for those traveling in a group
  3. Transactions history in the application, making it easier to track expenses
  4. Easy access to additional modes of onward transportation, such as GoRide or GoCar services, all in one app

Andre Soelistyo, CEO of GoTo, said, "GoTransit is a key product in our ecosystem and one that we hope will drive GoTo’s long-term growth, helping to attract new users looking for comprehensive mobility services. With a mission to support the ease of mobility for the public and tourists, GoTransit is an example of how GoTo's ecosystem products can remain relevant in responding to the needs of the public, aligned with government programs."

"GoTransit's expansion builds on our focus on the development of ecosystem-based products and services that will support GoTo’s long-term sustainable growth, following our accelerated profitability target with adjusted EBITDA expected to become positive in the fourth quarter of 2023," added Andre.

First launched in Jabodetabek, in June 2022, Gojek's cooperation with KAI Commuter to facilitate ticket purchases through the GoTransit service has been well-received by the public, becoming the primary choice for digital ticket sales and securing 74% market share by September 2022. GoTransit also encourages the purchase and use of digital tickets, resulting in a 300% increase in KCI's digital ticket sales by the end of 20222.

Suryawan Putra Hia, CEO of KAI Commuter said, "Amid the ongoing digital transformation of KAI Commuter, we are seeing an increasing number of commuters looking for a simple and convenient service when using Cmmuterline. Following the success in Jabodetabek, KAI Commuter is expanding its collaboration with Gojek in Region 6 of Yogyakarta, to better serve users of the Commuterline Solo-Jogja and Prambanan Ekspress Yogyakarta-Kutoarjo. We hope that by introducing the GoTransit feature, the public and tourists in Solo and Yogyakarta will continue to choose public transportation, particularly the Commuterline, for an efficient, congestion-free, and cost-effective travel option."

Based on data from KAI Commuter3 the total number of users of the Commuterline Solo-Jogja and local Prambanan Ekspres Trains reached 4.4 million passengers in 2022, making the commuterline the most popular mobility option amongst both locals and tourists. The highest daily volume of users was recorded in October 2022, with more than 28,000 people taking the train that day.

"We hope that by providing these various conveniences through GoTransit, we can encourage more people to use train-based public transportation, especially as tourism increases and mobility patterns return to normal." Suryawan continued.

At the same event, Sri Paduka Mangkoenagoro X, who was also a Pengageng Pura Mangkunegaran and Commissioner of PT KAI (Persero), praised and supported the innovation of KAI Commuter and Gojek. "Starting from Solo Balapan and Purwosari stations, the Indonesian Railways have a strong history with Mangkunegara. As part of the Indonesian Railways, we pledged to encourage the modernization of Indonesian rail services in order to keep up with the times. We fully support the digitalization innovation of ticket purchases via GoTransit in the Gojek application to help encourage the modernization of tourism in Surakarta, thereby supporting Mangkunegara's mission of promoting Javanese culture and encouraging tourism. We hope that in the future, Gojek and KAI Commuter’s collaboration will serve as a role model of collaboration between the government, the private sector, and the community, in strengthening domestic tourism aligned with cultural values."

Ganjar Pranowo, The Governor of Central Java, in his speech, also emphasized the importance of strengthening public transportation to encourage potential tourism exploration in Central Java. "In 2022, the number of tourists visiting Central Java was 11 million, and we project that this figure will rise in tandem with the return to social mobility norms. The role of public transportation such as Prambanan Ekspress and Commuterline Solo-Jogja, supported by GoTransit, is expected to be the mainstay of tourist mobility in Central Java, replacing private vehicles. By providing convenient public transportation, through the collaboration between Gojek and KAI Commuter d, we hope to encourage more people to explore tourist destinations in Central Java. Furthermore, GoTransit will also benefit the community's economic activities along the Solo-Jogja route."
