Jakarta, 3 June 2022 – PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (“GoTo Group'' or the “Company,” IDX:GOTO), the largest digital ecosystem in Indonesia, today announced that it has expanded its ‘Three Zeros’ commitments (Zero Emissions, Zero Waste, Zero Barriers) across its ecosystem, forming a consolidated approach and strategy for the Company, united behind common sustainability goals. Building on the materiality assessment conducted for Gojek in 2021, the Company has expanded this to Tokopedia and GoTo Financial, creating a benchmark and clear set of priorities for the entire GoTo ecosystem.

This announcement was unveiled in line with the publication of GoTo Group’s first sustainability report since the combination of Gojek and Tokopedia in 2021 and the Company’s historic listing on the Main Board of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in April, 2022. The report, entitled “Empowering Progress,” includes data from January-December 2021 and identifies the Company’s most material issues as climate action, diversity equity and inclusion (DEI), packaging use and disposal, governance structure and business ethics, as well as other targets, cementing GoTo’s status as a regional leader in sustainability reporting.

Andre Soelistyo, GoTo Group CEO said, “Sustainability has always been central to our business model, with ESG considerations at the heart of how we operate and grow as a company. Since forming GoTo Group, our collective reach and therefore responsibility has expanded significantly, and we are uniquely positioned to make an even greater positive impact together. The Three Zeros commitments continue to drive our company towards decarbonizing our operations and that of our broader ecosystem, building a truly circular platform, and investing in the growth of our employees and partners to achieve full inclusion in all aspects. We want to set the standard for empowering progress for Indonesia and Southeast Asia, and hold ourselves accountable to all our stakeholders, including investors, partners, employees, and regulators.”

Patrick Cao, GoTo’s President, elaborated on GoTo’s sustainability governance structure and accountability: “We are committed to creating long term value for our ecosystem, so it is vital that we embed ESG best practices into our governance structure and processes. To do this, we hold GoTo's senior leadership accountable for our ESG performance, ensure oversight from our Board, and set sustainability targets across all our operating companies aligned to global standards in ESG disclosure and reporting. Our efforts include the expansion of our external Advisory Council, to monitor our efforts and provide us with constant advice and feedback. Ultimately, this ensures we are all moving in the same direction, and are defining and measuring progress in a consistent way.”

GoTo’s ‘Empowering Progress’ sustainability report was published at the same time GoTo Group announced its Annual Report, full year 2021 annual results, and its first quarter 2022 financial results, as the Company began the process of aligning financial and non-financial disclosures in its reporting. Highlights of the report and progress against GoTo’s “Three Zeros” commitments include:

  • Zero Emissions: The Company is on track to reach its goal of zero emissions by 2030, through viable emissions reduction and carbon offset strategies. The combined Group’s total Scope 1, 2, and 3 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in 2021 were 817,248 tCO2e, with the largest proportion coming from use of sold products (part of Scope 3). GoTo’s goal to convert 100% of its driver fleet to electric vehicles (EV) by 2030 is making tangible progress through a pilot program with Electrum JV partner TBS Energi Utama in South Jakarta involving 500 EV bikes and 14 battery swapping stations, and collaborations with other partners including Gogoro, Gesits, Mitsubishi Motors, Santomo, and Pertamina. In-app carbon offset features have also been introduced for customers to measure and offset their individual emissions, including the GoCar/GoRide and the GoGreener Tree Collective. The GoTransit app also makes it easier for users to combine public transportation with first and last mile transportation on Gojek.

  • Zero Waste: The Company’s goal is to reduce and eventually eliminate pollution to the environment, including diverting as much waste as possible away from landfills. In 2021, GoTo completed its first ecosystem-wide waste accounting process, which covered all warehouses, offices and on-demand services. In total, GoTo's entire ecosystem generates approximately 335,000 metric tons of waste a year, of which less than 1% is from GoTo's direct operations, and the remainder indirectly from Gojek and Tokopedia's ecosystems. Although largely extrapolative given the nature of GoTo’s decentralized network of merchants and partners, the process creates a vital benchmark and identifies key areas where the Company can have the greatest impact in working towards its Zero Waste targets. Waste reduction efforts include reusable delivery bags, the shredding and repurposing or recycling of cardboard boxes, and providing guidelines for and encouraging partners to reduce and eliminate single-use products and utensils.

  • Zero Barriers: The Company has outlined its strategy for empowering people: attracting the right talent, developing the right skills, accelerating growth and financial inclusion, and championing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) within the Company and across its ecosystem. The report includes data about the gender and age diversity of its workforce as well as its Governance Board. As for the 2.6+ million drivers and 15+ million merchants in the ecosystem, GoTo continues to contribute about 2% of Indonesia’s GDP; support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) in training, business growth, entrepreneurship and service to marginalized communities; and promote financial inclusion and access to the digital economy. Safety metrics for driver partners reflect a strengthened incident response and support program, and GoTo Group also implemented new digital and payment safety initiatives in 2021.

GoTo has also committed to publishing roadmaps for the Three Zeros commitments on its website in the near future, so as to dynamically update stakeholders on its progress and ESG performance in real time.

Tanah Sullivan, GoTo Group Head of Sustainability said, “This report marks a year’s worth of progress, amid a challenging macro environment and new COVID-19 variants. It serves as our North Star that we will continue to strive towards. The challenges faced in 2021 gave us even stronger motivation to act more urgently, leveraging our combined ecosystem to amplify our impact and reach. At GoTo, we put the human side of our ecosystem at the core of everything we do, and our sustainability strategy is no different. These are the people at the very heart of our business who drive us and inspire us to do more and empower progress for all, not just a few. Our aim will always be to act in their best interests, ensuring our business model continues to create a lasting positive impact for people and planet, and holding ourselves accountable to global standards in sustainability best practice.”

GoTo’s report is indexed to GRI standards, SASB standards for road transportation and e-commerce industries and POJK requirements, and references the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. GoTo became a signatory of the World Economic Forum’s Stakeholder Capitalism Metrics in 2021. The Company engaged KAP Tanudiredja, Wibisana, Rintis and Rekan (the Indonesian member firm of the PricewaterhouseCoopers global network) to undertake a limited assurance engagement for select sustainability information in the report.
